Despite the coal phase-out, the coal company RWE plans to permanently demolish Lützerath and massively expand the Garzweiler open-pit mine. Once again, climate activists—as well as tens of thousands of citizens—will be at the center of attention and discussion with their protests and actions. Further highway blockades, disruptions to rush-hour traffic, or even airport disruptions could follow. Award-winning Cologne-based photographer David Klammer has been documenting the protests of climate activists through his photographs for years, not least in Lützerath or the Hambach Forest. When plans were made in 2020 to cut the A49 highway directly through a living forest in Hesse, David Klammer used his film camera to document the protests against the clearing of the Dannenröder Forest. David Klammer lived for weeks with the activists in their treehouses, which allowed him to create an impressive emotional closeness to the events through his images. With poetic imagery, the film delves deeply and trustingly into the activists’ motivations, fears, and hopes, while also providing a close-up view of the massive police operation against them.
